Builders seek regulatory authority to check prices of materials

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, APRIL 7. Builders in the city today appealed to the State Government to set up a regulatory authority to control the rise in prices of construction materials, especially cement.

"Cement prices are going up by 10 to 15 per cent. The companies are raising the prices like a cartel," said the chairman of the Builders' Association of India (Southern Regional Centre), L. Moorthi.

Steel prices also have gone up — Rs. 3,000 per tonne — in the last month making it difficult for builders to quote a rate. They found it increasingly difficult to take up big contracts as the cost escalation was huge due to price hike in materials.

The builders said they have requested the Centre to set up a similar authority consisting of companies, officials and builders to keep a tab on the fluctuating steel prices.

They also want the Centre to withdraw the 10.2 per cent service tax on housing projects with more than 12 flats.

The BAI said the delay in getting approval for construction projects from the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority is affecting the industry.

"We will get funds only if there is approval," he said.

Also after construction the builders had to go to the CMDA to get a `no objection certificate' for getting Metrowater connection for water and sewerage, leading to further delay, the builders said and urged the government to do away with the need for an NOC.
