CHENNAI, APRIL 7. Passing the Padi intersection without being trapped in traffic snarls will soon become reality for motorists. The Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, T.R. Baalu, today inaugurated the preliminary work for building grade separators at the site. The project would be executed by National Highways Authority of India and aims to free the traffic flow from Anna Nagar to Padi, Red Hills and Villivakkam. The Tamil Nadu Road Development Company is the managing associate to assist in implementation. The work will consist of building a grade-separated four-lane rotary with an outer diameter of 99 metres. Participating in the earth-breaking ceremony this morning, Mr. Baalu said such that a project was needed because of the alarming traffic congestion during peak hours. Recalling an hour-long wait at the junction during the recent election, he said the traffic intensity in terms of passenger car units in the intersection was 1.43 lakhs every day. About 8,800 cars crossed the junction every hour. Besides the increasing vehicle movement, the railway crossing located close to the junction worsened the congestion. The construction would be completed in two years. This is part of the project worth Rs. 200 crores aiming to construct grade separators at the intersections of Kathipara, Koyambedu and Padi, a flyover near the Chennai Airport and an underpass linking Trisulam railway station and the airport, Mr. Baalu explained. Widening of the NH-4 from Koyambedu junction to Maduravoyal would also be taken up as part of the project and completed simultaneously. The grade separator work at Koyambedu junction would start within 10 days. Work on a flyover near the Chennai Airport and an underpass connecting Trisulam railway station and the airport would also begin simultaneously. Mr. Baalu said that traffic diversions in Padi junction would be decided on after consultation with the traffic department officials. At present, preliminary work on testing the piles has been started. After 28 days, work on laying 464 piles would begin. C. Kuppuswamy, North Chennai Member of Parliament, Napolean, Villivakkam constituency Member of Legislative Assembly and L.K. Joshi, member, administration, National Highways Authority of India also participated.
