Teachers help spot students with eye defects

By Our Staff Correspondent

MANGALORE, APRIL 7. It was, perhaps, a unique gift that the Ganapathy Educational Institution received here on Thursday. The institution managed by Saraswath Education Society recently celebrated its golden jubilee. The management was more than delighted when organisations came forward to conduct a free eye check-up camp in the school.

The camp was jointly organised by the Rotary Club, Mangalore East, the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists' Union, and the A.J. Hospital and Research Centre, Mangalore. The organisers also distributed free spectacles to 21 students.

K. Rammohan Rao, ophthalmologist, said, "Knowing fully well that students are frightened of doctors, we enlisted the support of the teachers in the camp's first phase to check for possible eye defects. The teachers were trained to recognise defects and record their observations."

The results of tests conducted by teachers were near perfect and they were able to achieve 96.5 per cent accuracy.

Out of 500 students tested by teachers, 120 were found to have some defect. When ophthalmologists tested these students, 103 were found to have a problem.

He urged the organisers to conduct such camps on a regular basis, as it will help identify students with eye defects. Ravindra Shetty, president of the union, who released Kajjaya, an in-house magazine of the school, announced the union's decision to conduct similar camps for students of government-run Kannada medium schools in the city.

V.K.K. Kalluraya, president of the club, distributed free spectacles to the students.

The guests distributed prizes to achievers in `Sirigannada Prathiba' and `Puttani Vijnana' examinations on the occasion. Vitla Mangesh Bhat, headmaster, welcomed the gathering.

Kiran Panemangalore, secretary of the society, and Yellur Ramakishore Rao, vice-president, were present on the occasion.
