Jaundice: 15 more admitted to hospital

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, APRIL 7. The daily flow of suspected jaundice cases to Fever Hospital in Nallakunta seems to have set an average of at least 10 for itself.

On Thursday, 15 persons, feared to have contracted the disease, were admitted while the number of those admitted went up to 15 by Wednesday midnight.

The first week of April saw at least 10 patients admitted every day, with the maximum being 18 on April 1. Since then, daily figures had been 10, 10, 17, 10, 15 and 15 so far. The hospital, which discharged over 170 patients after at least a week's treatment to each patient, now has 110 beds occupied by jaundice patients.

It's official

Meanwhile, the Epidemiological Survey Teams that fanned out in the old city after the outbreak have confirmed that contaminated water and food were the sources of the virus spreading its yellow spots across the region. Though the teams, that submitted their report to the Health Director, G. Mastan Rao, here on Thursday, have repeated what was being reported in the media all these days, the report will be considered as the official explanation for the outbreak.

The report, to be forwarded to authorities concerned in the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewage Board, the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad, the principal secretary (Health), I.V. Subba Rao and other top official quarters, also mentions the circumstances that could have helped the water/food-borne viruses make their way to residents of the area.

Sources said the report pinpoints complete lack of personal hygiene and neglect of the same in food habits as a major reason for the outbreak. It also mentions the anomalies in the water supply system in the old city, the sources added.
