Relief yet to reach fire-ravaged people

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, APRIL 7. Standing bare foot under the hot sun, a grim looking Achamma was waiting for her turn in the queue on Thursday. An hour later, the 48-year-old woman was walking back home carrying a couple of new utensils and a bucket.

She was among the 2,000 unfortunate ones, whose huts and belongings were reduced to ashes in a fire that swept through the Singareni Colony at Saidabad, which left four dead on February 9 this year. An NGO, Sahayata Trust, distributed utensils and other essential items among the 2,000-odd affected people.

`Give us shelter'

"Can someone give us proper shelter? In this terrible summer, staying under tents makes me feel like I am being burnt alive?" says Achamma.

Like her, all those staying there are finding it difficult to continue anymore. "Where can we go? If we leave this place, we have to live on the street," feels Bhoomaiah, who stays along with his wife and two children near Achamma's portion.

He complains that water supply is not adequate. "We have to fight with each other everyday, it's like a battlefield," says Bhoomaiah. "What happened to the promises made by the Government soon after the mishap?" he asks.

"What can you do for us? A big issue was made about the mishap. What happened? Our lives have only worsened and the Government is not bothered. Do not give us any hopes," says an elderly woman, who has refused to give her name, tersely.

However, the gesture by the trust has come as a relief for all. "Most of them did not have proper utensils even to cook and therefore we have decided to distribute it among them," says Abbadula, Managing Trustee of the trust.

Each family was given appliances worth Rs. 300. "The relief from the Government will come, if not sooner," remarked a Communist Party of India activist, who was supervising the distribution of utensils.
