Power thefts detected

KOCHI, APRIL 7. Instances of power theft and related offences, estimated at Rs. 4.28 crores, were unearthed in a series of raids conducted by the Kerala State Electricity Board Vigilance, Anti-Power Theft Squad and Meter Testing Department within the district and its periphery.

The raids, which began on April 4, continued late tonight. Seventy officers in nine squads held the raids in nearly 200 institutions and power theft was detected in 10 of them, while other serious offences were detected in more than 30 institutions. It was found that a leading chain of hotels was using remote-controlled devices for power theft.

Instances of power theft were mainly found at Abad Hotel, Nedumbassery; Abad Plaza, Mahatma Gandhi Road, Ernakulam; Abad Whispering Plaza, Kumarakom; Fatima Seafoods, Thoppumpady; and Periyar Plywoods, Perumbavoor.

The raids will be extended to the rest of the State, said Rishi Raj Singh, Inspector-General, Kerala State Electricity Board Vigilance.
