KOCHI, APRIL 7. Scientific research should be taken up for measuring the environmental effect of Somayagam, said T.P. Sasikumar, scientist, Indian Space Research Organisation, Secunderabad, here today. He was speaking on `Environmental effects of Yagas' at a seminar here in connection with the Somayagam being held on Siva Temple grounds. "The belief is that a yaga heals the environment and we benefit from it." He quoted a World Health Organisation report on the electromagnetic field generated by various electronic equipment used in households. Microwave oven generated the strongest field around it, he said. A constant exposure to the field on a one-metre radius around electromagnetic gadgets would cause health problems, he said. Transformers had a strong field around seven feet, he added. He said studies should be taken up to find if Yagas helped reduce the effect of electromagnetic field. The science behind Vaastu was also to avoid electromagnetic influence on our living space, he added. The seminar was inaugurated by K.S. Radhakrishnan, Acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court. Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math, Udupi, addressed the gathering. Talks were held on topics such as `Common man and yagas' by Lakshmi Kumari, founder-director of Vivekananda Vedic Mission, Kodungallur; `Significance of Yagnas' by Paranjit Pai, a Vedic Scholar from Mysore; and `Yaga and Management Science' by T.P. Sreeraman, a Vedic scholar from Thrikkur. K.S. Radhakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, delivered the valedictory address. At a discourse held later, P. Parameswaran, director, Bharatheeya Vichara Kendram, spoke on the `Social importance of Yagam'.
