Personalised eye treatment launched

By Our Special Correspondent

MADURAI, APRIL 7. A personalised refractive eye treatment, `Zyoptix 100,' which is based on technology used by NASA to map the moon's surface, has been launched at the Aravind Eye Hospital here, in association with Bausch and Lomb.

The painless vision correction procedure, which uses laser beams, is useful for those with myopia (short sight), hyperopia (long sight) or mixed astigmatism (cylindrical power). The procedure, which has high cosmetic value, does not require hospitalisation.

Announcing the launch of the new procedure here today, the Director of Aravind Eye Hospital, P. Namperumalsamy, said `Zyoptix 100' was a popular procedure, which helped ophthalmologists address more challenges in eye care. The Joint Director, M. Srinivasan, said refractive blindness accounted for 19 per cent of population with eye diseases in the country, next only in size to cataract. `Zyoptix 100' was a custom-made personalised refractive procedure, which took into account the uniqueness of every eye. The one-time procedure was capable of restoring normal vision within three hours and was ideal for those in the age group of 20 to 50 years. The only pre-condition was that the patient should not have cataract.

Rajat Goel, General Manager, Bausch and Lomb, said `Zyoptix 100' provided optimum visual results and was known for its safety and predictability.

It was a personalised vision correction system, which helped the surgeon to decide the best treatment for individual eyes.
