COIMBATORE, APRIL 7. The heavy rain in the district has helped raise the water level in the Siruvani catchment area by 59 cm overnight. The city's major drinking water supply provider recorded 186 mm and foothills recorded 110 mm. The storage in the reservoir stood at 43.56 ft as against the full reservoir level of 67.65 ft. The district received heavy downpour on Wednesday evening for almost eight hours. Starting around 6 p.m., the rain left the roads inundated and the Electricity Board staff was on their toes because of breakdowns in supply reported from many areas. The Agriculture Department sources pointed out that the rain besides cooling the temperature has helped in wetting the fields substantially. The district witnessed slight drizzles to moderate showers on Thursday evening as well. The rainfall in mm recorded at various places in the district are as follows; Annur 50, Avanashi 60, Mettuppalayam 24, Airport 20.2, Sulur 149.6, Palladam 87.4, Tirupur 114, Agriculture University 34.2, Anaimalai Cinchona 70, Chinna Kallar 93.4, Valparai PAP 46.4, Valparai taluk 52, Sholayar 16.4, Parambikulam 102.00, Aliyar 54.6, Tirumurthy 30, Amaravathy 22, Thoonakadavu 68, Peruvaripallam 73, Upper Nirar 93.4, Lower Nirar 82, Uppar dam in Dharapuram (Erode district) 55, Upper Aliyar 18, Kadamparai 61.7, Vettaikaranpudur 31, Manakkadavu 182, Sultanpet 137, Pongalur 38, Kengeyam 40, Navamalai 22, Nallaru 19 and Sircarpathy 51. Though the rainfall was substantial in the Western Ghats in and around Pollachi, it failed to help much in improving the storage in the reservoirs.
Water level in reservoirs
Water level in reservoirs in ft (Full Reservoir level is in brackets):Sholayar 21.75 ft (160), Parambikulam 12.79 (145), Aliyar 59.60 (120), Tirumurthy 28.73 (60) and Amaravathy 24.67 (90). The widespread rain in the ayacut areas of Parambikulam - Aliyar Project has helped in wetting the irrigation lands and it is expected to reduce the pressure in releasing water for irrigation. Currently, the third Zone of the PAP was getting water. Reports reaching from Pollachi said that the widespread showers on Wednesday and the continuing intermittent showers or drizzles will help in renewing the vegetation at the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary, which is presently closed due to water scarcity. The rain brought some smile for the forest managers, since the spell will help considerably in preventing forest fire.
Storage
The continuing rain in parts of the Nilgiris district is expected to improve the storage in the Pilloor reservoir, the city's next major drinking water provider. The arrival of long distance express buses was also delayed this morning. The Southern Railway also reported delayed arrival of Niligiri, Cheran and Island Express ranging from 60 minutes to two hours.
