THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, APRIL 7. The Government has given the nod for the construction of a Rs. 66-lakh waste disposal system as part of finding a permanent solution to the garbage disposal problem in the beach resort of Kovalam, the Minister for Tourism, K. C. Venugopal, has said. Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the tourist facilitation complex and beautification of the Samudra beach in Kovalam, near here today, Mr. Venugopal said the Government had agreed in principle the project submitted in this regard by the Vizhinjam panchayat. The proposed waste disposal system would be implemented in the resort by Kerala Tourism with the cooperation of the local panchayat. The walkway constructed in the Eve's and Light House beaches would be further extended at a cost of Rs. 35 lakhs. The roads in and around the resort till Pulinkudi, south of Kovalam, would be renovated. A sum of Rs. 25 lakhs had been sanctioned for this.
Streetlights
Streetlights and signboards would be installed with the assistance of the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (Natpac) at a cost of Rs. 30 lakhs. Stating that the Government would not allow unauthorised construction in the resort, Mr. Venugopal said all concerned would have to strictly follow the rules. The Minister said the projects kicked off today would be completed in six months. The district panchayat president, Sasikala Sivasankar, presided. The Managing Director of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation, M. N. Gunavaradhanan, the president of the Block Panchayat, B. Jayaprakash, the president of the Vizhinjam panchayat, Mukkola G. Prabhakaran and the local panchayat member, P. Sukesan, were among those who attended. The Additional Director, Tourism, Ashok Kumar Singh, welcomed the gathering and the secretary of the local unit of the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association, P. Natarajan, proposed vote of thanks.
