BANGALORE, APRIL 7. The Child Welfare Committee (CWC), which examined 13-year-old Sunita, who escaped from her employees last Saturday, has said that she has "scars all over and has undergone immense mental trauma". Sunita (name changed to protect her identity) was allegedly beaten, harassed and even poked with red-hot knives by her employers. She was working as a domestic servant in an apartment and was brought to work for the couple by the wife's father-in-law. She suffered this for months before she escaped and was rescued by Child Helpline and given shelter by the Association for Promotion of Social Action (APSA). A CWC member said a medical examination was done on the girl and it was found that she had suffered physical abuse and had scars all over. She had been sent to the Manipal Hospital for further examination. The CWC would apprise the City Police Commissioner, S. Mariswamy of the incident and also file an FIR against the couple with the Krishnarajapuram Police Station on Friday, she said. Many neighbours of the couple and people staying in the vicinity have given representations to the CWC in the matter. "It is shocking how a young, educated and highly-qualified couple could do such a thing," the CWC member said. She added that Sunita's employers had wrongly stated that she was aged 19. The doctors who examined her said she could not be aged more than 13.
