BANGALORE, APRIL 7. Employees of Hindustan Machine Tools Ltd. (HMT) went on a snap strike on Thursday after one of their colleagues, Madhavan (46), was electrocuted at the factory in the Jalahalli Police Station limits. The Chairman and Managing Director of HMT, M.S. Zahed, told The Hindu that Madhavan, an electrician, was electrocuted around 10.30 a.m. when he was checking a fuse on the 11 kV line after power tripped at the factory. The accident occurred at the new distribution centre in the powerhouse of the factory. The police said nearly 2,000 employees struck work and gathered in front of the HMT Hospital where Madhavan's body was kept. They threw stones at the hospital, damaging its glass panes. They also blocked traffic for some time. The employees demanded that Mr. Zahed should come there and issue an appointment order to a member of Madhavan's family on compassionate grounds, the police said. When the HMT authorities expressed their inability to fulfil the demand immediately, the employees got agitated and did not allow the police to take the body for autopsy. However, after the authorities agreed to consider their demand, the employees dispersed peacefully around 5 p.m., the police said. As the situation was tense since morning, the police tightened security at the factory. The body has been taken to M.S. Ramaiah Hospital and will be handed over to his family after autopsy on Friday, the police said. Mr. Zahed said he had promised the family members of Madhavan of all assistance from the company. On providing a job to the kin of Madhavan, he said the decision has to be taken at the board level as the company has stopped recruitments.
