Wright replacement by month-end: BCCI

JAMSHEDPUR, APRIL 8. The BCCI will fill in the coach's slot by this month-end after John Wright parts ways with the Indian team after five eventful years.

Talking to UNI here on Friday, BCCI secretary, S.K. Nair said, "although the Board wanted him to continue till the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean, Wright was eager to rejoin his family in New Zealand. We respect his feelings and so have no other option but to part ways with him at the end of this series.

"We are very much hopeful of appointing a new coach by the end of April after the ongoing one day series against Pakistan is over," he said.

Mr. Nair said the process of finding the new coach would begin soon and the final decision would be taken by the BCCI Working Committee. "The fact that the India-Sri Lanka ODI series has been put off has given us some breathing space to find a replacement," he added.

He, however, refused to disclose the names of Wright's probable successors. "I am not going to tell you whether we have short-listed someone. Nor will I tell you whether the new person will be a foreigner or an Indian."

To fly back

Meanwhile, BCCI regretted the stone-throwing incident at the Pakistan team bus and announced that adequate measures were being taken to fly out both the teams from the steel city to Ranchi for the return journey.

"It was a stray incident. But it is a regrettable one," Mr. Nair said. Nair said immediately after the incident at Ranchi on Wednesday when a stray stone hit the Pakistan team bus shattering the glass, he and the board's media coordinator Amrit Mathur had spoken to the Pakistan team management. — UNI
