Matthew ousts Vishal

NEW DELHI, APRIL 8. Jaco T. Matthew enhanced his growing reputation with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over veteran Davis Cupper Vishal Uppal in the singles pre-quarterfinals of the $10,000 ITF Futures men's tennis event in Colombo on Friday.

Third seed Vijay Kannan survived a scare from Indonesian Sunu-Wahyu Trijati before winning 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Kamala Kannan bowed out with a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Konstantin Gruber of Austria.

In doubles, Uppal and Ashutosh Singh reached the final with a hard fought 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 win over American Adam Fass and Tai-Wei Liu of Chinese Taipei.

An interesting all-India quarterfinal clash is in store between Rohan Bopanna and Karan Rastogi after the two scored contrasting wins over their respective rivals on Thursday. Bopanna continued with his good form to defeat Martin Fischer of Austria 6-4, 6-3 while Rastogi had to quell a late challenge from compatriot Ranjeet Virali-Murugesan 6-1, 7-5 to reach the last eight stage.

In an all-Indian clash, Vijay Kannan proved too good for Ashutosh Singh, winning 6-0, 6-1. Kamala Kannan fought a ding-dong battle against King Cheong-Eui to beat the Korean 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. according to information received here.

The results: pre-quarterfinals: Jaco T. Matthew bt Vishal Uppal 6-4, 6-4; Vijay Kannan bt Sunu-Wahyu Trijati 2-6, 6-3, 6-2; Konstantin Gruber bt Kamala Kannan 6-3, 6-0.
