Court directs AIIMS to examine Kanshiram

By Our Legal Correspondent

NEW DELHI, APRIL 8. The Supreme Court today directed the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to depute a team of doctors to examine the health condition of the Bahujan Samaj Party leader, Kanshiram, who is staying and taking treatment at the residence of the party supremo, Mayawati.

A Bench, comprising Justice N. Santosh Hegde and Justice S. B. Sinha, said the team would evaluate and examine his health condition and give its opinion whether he required to be hospitalised or whether the present treatment from home could be continued.

It directed the AIIMS to submit a report in 10 days.

The Bench gave this direction on an application by Mr. Kanshiram's mother, Bishan Kaur, who alleged that her son was not being given proper treatment ever since he was shifted to the house of Ms. Mayawati from hospital last year. Senior counsel R. N. Trivedi, appearing for Ms. Mayawati, denied that Mr. Kanshiram was not being looked after properly. He said Mr. Kanshiram was getting proper treatment and was constantly being attended to by doctors from various hospitals, including some government hospitals. But he said there was no objection to examination by a panel of doctors from the AIIMS.

Pappu Yadav treatment

The same judges also directed the AIIMS doctors to examine the RJD Member of Parliament, Pappu Yadav, detained in the Tihar Jail in connection with the Ajit Sarkar murder case, for providing treatment for diabetes and obesity.

The Bench said the team would decide whether he required treatment, either as inpatient or outpatient.

The Bench made it clear that if he were admitted to hospital, the Tihar Jail authorities should ensure that only his nearest relatives were allowed to meet him during visiting hours.
