By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, APRIL 8. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, today said that there was no immediate plan to expand his Council of Ministers, and indicated the exercise could be conducted after the local bodies elections. Interacting with correspondents after his meeting with the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, here, Dr. Reddy said the Cabinet expansion was `not in near future'. Asked whether it could be carried out after the municipal elections, he observed while he could not say for certain, it could happen that way. While refusing to share details of the discussion he had with Ms. Gandhi, the Chief Minister said that it centred round people, party and the Government. He said all issues, including Telangana, were discussed. Dr. Reddy also dared the Telugu Desam Party to come and discuss across the table, instead of hurling accusations and levelling charges of corruption in the irrigation projects being undertaken by the State Government. The Chief Minister expressed difficulty of the State intervening further and procure chilli produce. He said the State Government was likely to incur a loss of Rs. 50 crores having procured some 30,000 tonnes earlier. He said the Government spent Rs. 90 crores for procuring it and spent Rs. 10 crores for cold storage. As against the expenditure, it got just Rs. 13 crores by disposing of 11,000 tonnes. He said the State Government had been advising farmers to diversify.
World Bank loan sought
The Chief Minister also called on the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and urged him to extend the Food-for-work programme to seven more backward districts, seek support of Rs. 3000-crore World Bank loan for water sector improvement project, locate natural hazard warning centre and research centre at Visakhapatnam, issue Presidential order for organising local cadres in respect of teachers in panchayati raj institutions, implement expansion plan for Visakhapatnam steel plant, revive Bharat Heavy Plates and Vessels and Hindustan Cables, shift part of the Central Water Commission to Hyderabad, classify Hyderabad into Class I city and put a market regulator in place to determine gas and coal prices. In a separate meeting with the Fertiliser Minister, Ram Vilas Paswan, the Chief Minister sought release of 200 acres of land from Visakhapatnam steel plant for the proposed Volkswagen car plant there.
