Rotten flowers, betel leaves yield dye, soft drink

By Marcus Dam

KOLKATA, APRIL 8. Be it rotten flowers or shrivelled betel leaves , they could still come of use — even with commercial value. Discarded marigolds and hibiscuses have been processed in the laboratory to produce dye for textiles, while research has shown that the oil extracted from betel leaves through "membrane technology" can be used in the manufacture of a carbonated soft-drink that both refreshes and helps in digestion.

The products, developed by researchers at Jadavpur University's Department of Chemical Engineering in Kolkata, have been tested with positive results.
