KOLKATA, APRIL 8. Tamil Nadu XI put up an improved display to beat Bombay XI by a solitary goal and stayed in contention for a place in the semifinals of the Indian Oil all-India 110th Beighton Cup hockey tournament at the CC&FC ground here on Friday. The other two quarterfinal league matches between BSF and IOC and Corps of Signals and Karnataka XI ended in 1-1 draws. Some good combination play and coordination between the ranks marked Tamil Nadu's first victory in the quarterfinal league after it lost to Army XI in the opening game on Thursday. Captain B. Alfred Aseer scored the winner in the 39th minute off a penalty corner. The victory enabled the South side gain three points from two games, while Bombay has three. Karnataka was not lucky despite drawing its match against Corps of Signals. It was CoS which shot into the lead in the 34th minute through G. Das' field goal. Roland Kiran equalised for Karnataka to save the team from elimination. Both teams took their first points in the league stage. In the other match, BSF scored first through Marianus Lakra in the 12th minute, putting IOC under pressure. The National runner-up, however, replied with a fine goal through Roshan Minz in the 32nd minute. The result helped both teams as they ended on four points each. Our Special Correspondent
