Orissa outplays Karnataka

By Our Special Correspondent

MUMBAI, APRIL 8. Orissa scored a thumping win over Karnataka in the BCCI all-India one-day knock-out tournament at the Brabourne Stadium here on Friday.

Thanks to a blazing start provided by B.B.C.C. Mahapatra and former Test opener Shiv Sundar Das, Orissa outplayed Karnataka by six wickets and 28 balls to spare.

The South team set a formidable target of 285, but Mahapatra's 25-ball fifty with nine boundary shots (5x4, 4x6) and a remarkable unbeaten effort of 82 from Das (66b, 14x4, 1x6) saw Orissa progress at 10 runs an over initially to bring its opponent under immense pressure.

Orissa will now meet Mumbai in the quarterfinals at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday.

Karnataka made some inroads after Das, troubled by severe cramps, was carried off the field (at 172 for one), but the fifth wicket pair of Niranjan Behera — who had picked up four wickets bowling off-spin — and P. Jayachandra played with purpose and some flair too.

Off-spinner C. Raghu, easily the best bowler of the match, took the vital wickets of R.R. Parida (53, 77b, 4x4s) and P. Mullick as the Orissa innings slid from 180 for one to 211 for four.

Sensing an opportunity to come back into the match, the Karnataka skipper Sujith Somasundar brought back his seamers — N.C. Aiyappa and B. Akhil — but Behera and Jayachandra faced the fresh challenge with remarkable poise, the latter even punishing them after having clouted two successive sixes of Barrington Rowland who bowled leg spin.

Earlier, put in by Orissa skipper Debasis Mohanty, Karnataka made a steady start before Robin Uthappa's promising innings was cut short by a fine piece of fielding by Mahapatra at third man.

The first wicket stand produced 67 runs in 14.4 overs, after which Barrington and Somasundar took advantage of some ordinary bowling to take the run rate to over five.

Barrington (104, 123b, 8x4) played some handsome shots, while Somasundar cut and carved to make 77 off 76 balls with seven hits to the fence and two over the line.

Railways begins well

At the Wankhede Stadium, Ranji Trophy champion Railways defeated Delhi by five wickets.

It was a typical team effort from the newly-crowned National champion as seamers Harvinder Singh and J.P. Yadav bowled well in their opening spells to reduce Delhi to 27 for five. However, skipper Ajay Jadeja (98, 148b, 6x4, 3x6) and Bhatia (46, 74b) helped their team recover to score 213 for eight in 50 overs.

Delhi hit back taking three Railways wickets by the 13th over, but J.P. Yadav (60, 65b, 7x4, 3x6) and Bangar (55, 90b, 7x4, 1x6) rose to the challenge to secure a win.
