RANIPET, APRIL 8. The Boilers Auxiliaries Plant (BAP) of the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL), Ranipet, achieved an all time high turnover of Rs. 545.10 crores, crossing the Rs. 500-crore mark for the first time and achieving the highest ever growth rate of 40 per cent during 2004-05 against Rs. 388.48 crores during the previous year. Another creditable achievement of the Ranipet unit was that it was the first public sector undertaking to have won the Indian Merchants Chamber-Ramakrishna Bajaj National Quality Award 2004 for Business Excellence in the manufacturing category, competing with 450 companies, mostly private, in India and abroad, S. Sathyanarayanan, General Manager of the BHEL BAP, Ranipet, told reporters at a press conference here on Friday. Mr. Sathyanarayanan said the Ranipet unit earned a profit before tax of Rs. 20.10 crores despite an increase in steel prices. It has achieved a physical turnover of 72,500 tonnes as compared to 53,877 tonnes in 2003-04, a growth of 35 per cent, and exceeding its capacity for the first time. The General Manager said during the year under review, the BAP secured orders worth Rs. 800 crores, including direct orders of Rs. 231 crores, up from Rs. 85 crores in the previous year. The total outstanding order book increased from Rs. 936 crores to Rs. 1,271 crores. The unit has also taken various information technology initiatives, notable among them being the development of a software for power plant applications in association with Tata Consultancy Services and the development of an Internet-based vendor enquiry system.
