Travel agents down shutters

By Our Staff Correspondent

MUMBAI, APRIL 8. Most travel agents across the country today resorted to a one-day bandh to protest against Air-India's decision to reduce the commission paid to travel agents from 7 per cent to 5 per cent effective May 1. Already more than 2,000 travel agents have suspended sale of Air-India tickets since April 1.

Speaking to The Hindu, Balbir Mayal, President, TAAI, said, "the loss due to the bandh today would amount to around Rs. 2 crores for the travel agents, particularly because this is the holiday season.'' Representatives of the two nodal travel associations Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) and Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) had met the Chairman and Managing Director of Air-India on April 2 and were informed that the airlines' decision to reduce the commission paid to travel agents from 7 per cent to 5 per cent effective May 1 was in view of the spiralling fuel prices.

A spokesman of Air-India said that Air-India's booking offices would be issuing tickets at a competitive market fare levels.
