Shinde, YSR's Ugadi greetings

HYDERABAD: The Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, and the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Friday greeted people on the occasion of Ugadi. In a message, Mr. Shinde hoped that the Telugu New Year would bring happiness, goodwill and amity. The Governor said: "We are entering Parthiva from Tarana with hope and anticipation. May Parthiva be a memorable and rewarding year for all of us.

Let us look forward to a plentiful year of joy, satisfaction, peace and prosperity for all citizens and the State." Dr. Reddy wished Ugadi be a stepping stone to the ushering in of `Harithandhra Pradesh.' He called for efforts to ensure that every drop of water reaches the crop. "Everyone should strive for building of a better Andhra Pradesh and bettering the lot of the poor and weaker sections". The APCC president, K. Keshava Rao, conveyed his Parthivanama Ugadi greetings to people and hoped that Telugus would have a happy and joyful year ahead.

Special programmes on DD

HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Doordarshan (DD) will telecast special programmes on April 9 to mark Ugadi as part of the special transmission on Saptagiri channel from 9.30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The programmes are: `Hasya kavisammelanam' by comedians Rallapalli, Ravikondala Rao, Suttivelu, Anant and Jenny, an interview with herione Sada and a live show with a famous film artiste. A telefilm, `Lilly malli pelli,' vedapatanam by Sanskrit scholars and `Panchanga sravanam' by C.V.B. Subrahmanyam, Dean, Astrology Department, Telugu University, will also be telecast.

Puraskar for poet, five others

Kakinada: Poet, S.T. Gnanananda Kavi, a recipient of Padmasri, is one among six prominent persons selected for Ugadi Puraskar by the district Cultural Affairs Council. The others are: Munuganti Sriramamurthy, founder-secretary of the Tyagaraja Seva Samithi, D. Balakrishnamurthy a recipient of national awards for adopting modern agricultural practices such as inter crops in coconut gardens and direct sowing of paddy seeds, woman entrepreneur, Goluguri Lakshmi Kumari, astrologist, Cherukupalli Lakshmi Nrusimha Sarma, and K. Durrani, who is striving for communal harmony. They will be honoured at Ugadi Sammelan at Suryakala Mandir here on Saturday.

Man drowned in Peravaram canal trying to save daughter

Kakinada: In a tragic incident, Jakka Adivenkata Vara Prasad (30) of Dwarapudi village, was drowned in Peravaram pumping scheme canal on Friday while trying to rescue his eight-year-old daughter from getting drowned. According to the Atreyapuram police, both father and daughter entered the canal for bathing when the mishap occurred.

Police question Suri in Prabhakar murder case

ANANTAPUR: The Two Town police on Friday interrogated the key suspect in the Paritala Ravindra murder case, Suri, in connection with the Tagarakunta Prabhakar murder case.

On producing before the AJFCM, A. Jayaraj, he was again remanded to judicial custody till April 15 and was taken to the district jail at Reddypalli.

The Central Bureau of Investigation, which is probing the Paritala Ravindra murder case, took the blood sample of P. Narayana Reddy, a suspect in the Paritala case, at General Hospital. It would be sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory for examination.

Talking to newspersons at the hospital, Narayana Reddy said a few of their associates were already out to `liquidate' key Paritala aides.

Meanwhile, the efforts of the district jail authorities to move P. Goverdhan Reddy and B. Ramasway, two other suspects in the Paritala case, to Chanchalguda prison in Hyderabad failed as they refused to cooperate.

Murder case: life term for two

NARSARAOPET: The Additional District Fast Track Court Judge, K. Vasudeva Rao, on Friday sentenced two persons - Sheik Basha and Sheik Hasna -- to life imprisonment for murdering one Dharanikota Gandhi. The judge also imposed a monetary fine of Rs.500 each on them. The two had attacked Gandhi at Piduguralla in Guntur district on September 15, 2000, with knives following a personal dispute, which led to his death on his way to hospital. JCA withdraws boycott of Intermediate valuation work

HYDERABAD: The Joint Council of Action (JCA) of college teachers, lecturers and Principals of private affiliated and aided junior colleges withdrew their three-day-old boycott of Intermediate valuation work. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, V. Damodar Reddy, president, and G. Sridhar Reddy, secretary-general, said the decision to withdraw the boycott was taken after a meeting with the Higher Education Minister, P. Venkateswara Rao. The JCA had called for boycott of valuation protesting against what it termed "violation of an agreement" reached by the Government with it. The council alleged that the Government was not honouring earlier promises that among others pertained to payment of arrears to aided degree college teachers, count the unaided service, modify GO 120 and to exempt from the national/State eligibility tests aided college teachers on a par with lecturers of Government colleges.

Call to Youth Congress workers

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Youth Congress president, T. Venkat Rao, has called upon cadre to actively participate in the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's `Praja Patham' programme being launched on April 11. Mr. Rao asked workers to confront TDP cadre, if they try to disrupt the Chief Minister's programme, according to a press note issued here.

DevCon-2005 in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: A full day technical event useful for software developers focusing on current and emerging Microsoft technologies, DevCon-2005, will be held at Chip Auditorium in Cyber Towers on Sunday. Some of the well-known Dev gurus (expert developers) will participate in the event being organised by Microsoft User Group Hyderabad (MUGH). The event will also coincide with the second anniversary of MUGH in Hyderabad. More than 3,000 persons have enrolled themselves as members in MUCH. Dredging corporation's distinction in mid-size PSUs

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) here has been ranked as one of the top 10 public sector undertakings and the best in mid-size PSUs having a turnover of Rs.500 crores to Rs.1,000 crores in India Today-CRISIL survey. The survey was done on the performance of the PSUs between 1998 and 2003, according to a press release. The DCI Chairman and Managing Director, N.K. Gupta, had been elected a member of the executive body of the Standing Conference of Public Enterprises (SCOPE), the press release added. SCOPE is a professional apex organisation of Government enterprises to provide the Government with a structured form of consultative mechanism with chief executives of PSUs.

Invited for `kavi sammelan'

CUDDAPAH: An Urdu poet and headmaster of Nayanoripalle Urdu School in Chintakommadinne mandal, Sattar Faizi, has been invited to the national Urdu kavi sammelan to be held as part of Hazrath Khwaja Syed Shah Kanji Biyabhani Urs at Gurramkonda in Chittoor district on April 9.

About 15 poets from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh will participate in the kavi sammelan.

Ugadi special on DD8.

TIRUPATI: The Doordarshan, Tirupati Kendra, will telecast the play, "Bhuvana Vijayam", in its Saptagiri (DD8) channel at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday on the occasion of Ugadi. The chariot festival of Sri Lakshmi Narasimha temple in Kadiri (Anantapur district) will be telecast on April 10 at 9.30 a.m. on the same channel, according to a release.

House burgled

ANANTAPUR: Valuables worth about Rs. 4 lakhs were taken away from the house of an ACTO, Damodaram, in Aravind Nagar on Thursday night. According to the police, five men aged between 20 and 25, entered the house by breaking open the doors. They tied up the family members with ropes after taking the keys of the almirah and decamped with Rs. 52,000 in cash, 3 kg of silver articles and 350 grams of gold jewellery.

Junior lecturers stage dharna

ANANTAPUR: The Andhra Pradesh Junior College Lecturers' Association staged a dharna in front of the New Town Junior College here on Friday. The State vice-president of the association, Rajaram, asked the Government to clear their arrears, sanction five days special leave for women lecturers every month and reintroduce counselling for transfers.

Golden jubilee celebrations

NELLORE: The executive committee meeting of Andhra Hockey Association, will be held at the A.C. Subba Reddy Sports Stadium, Nellore, at 11 a.m. on April 10. The meeting will discuss about organising the golden jubilee celebrations of the association and activities of the coming season.
