MAN OF THE MOMENT: Mohammed Ghouse who exhibited remarkable presence of mind in catching Suhasini in the girl-burning case. Photo: P. V. Sivakumar
HYDERABAD, APRIL 8. "Mohammed Ghouse? Oh yes, just go straight, cross the railway track and you can find him sitting on the compound wall of a temple. It is regarding that incident, right? He and his friends have done a great job." These words of praise come from a group of persons sitting on a portico at a corner of Adaiahnagar at Bansilalpet. A small-time kirana shop owner, Ghouse is now a well-known man in his locality. He is among the three persons who gathered the courage to catch Suhasini, who along with her live-in companion, Samuel Johnson, allegedly set fire to the body of a 13-year-old girl in the backyard of a Government school in Adaiahnagar on April. 4. Ghouse, Krishna, and K.R. Dinesh Anand, a police constable, all residents of the same locality, have become so famous in the locality that just a mention of their name and the residents immediately recall their extraordinary act.
Their regret
"Everyone here appreciated our work. But, it would have been a bigger achievement had we caught hold of that man. He was well built but ran away on seeing us. We missed him in seconds," recalls Ghouse. But how did the police react to their act of courage? "Initially, they did not believe that the woman was involved. We were made to stand the entire day and taken to all nearby places as only we could identify the man. Throughout the day, we were given nothing to eat or drink. It was only in the night, around 11 pm when they gave us tokens for Biryani," they said. Sadly, the police did not acknowledge the good work done by them. "They gave Rs. 100 and asked us to leave."
