Civic administrators join issue with MLA

By Our Staff Reporter

KOCHI, APRIL 8. The controversy over the reported statement by K. Babu, MLA, regarding taking over of Kochi Corporation roads by the Public Works Department (PWD) has kicked up further debate with two Standing Committee chairmen of the Corporation coming out against the legislator, today.

K.M. Hamsakunju, Works Standing Committee chairman, and K.D. Vincent, Town Planning Standing committee chairman, described Mr. Babu's statement as "a move to usurp the powers of civic bodies."

They also questioned the intentions of the MLA, who, according to them, had "never helped the Corporation during the past 15 years of his term as MLA."

They said the Kochi Corporation had not requested the Public Works Department or the legislator to take over any of the roads of the Corporation. Even if the Public Water Department proposes to take over the roads, it is the Public Works Minister and not the legislator who can make any statements in that regard.

The recent statements of Mr. Babu were aimed at covering up his follies, the panel chairmen alleged.

The civic administrators alleged that none of the MLAs had helped in the development of Sahodaran Ayyappan Road. The Corporation took the initiative and completed 97 per cent of the work with people's participation.

The remaining part of the road would be developed when the district administration hands over the area for development by way of acquisition. The Public Works Department had also failed to initiate steps for the development of the road, they said.
