NEW DELHI, APRIL 8. The Municipal Commissioner, Rakesh Mehta, today said the Municipal Corporation of Delhi would soon launch a special campaign in the South and Central zones to round up stray cattle and remove illegal dairies for which 20 colonies and areas have been identified. Speaking after viewing the auctioning at Baprola village of 120 cows and buffaloes that were caught by the civic body from South Delhi localities, Mr. Mehta said help of the police would also be taken during the drive. The civic body had been able to deal with people's resistance against the drive successfully and only those with vested interests were opposing the move, he added. According to Mr. Mehta, the Corporation officials have so far removed 10 major illegal dairies from areas like R.K. Puram drain, Ekta Vihar near Man Singh Market in R.K. Puram and Shastri Market at Moti Bagh, Transitor Camp at Govindpuri, Sudhar Camp at Kalkaji, Tughlakhabad Extension and Jamroodpur Village. As per the directions issued by the Delhi High Court, the MCD started a special drive in September 2003 and started catching stray cattle. Till March 2005, over 30,000 cattle were caught and moved to various cow shelters. "The Corporation was developing a new modern dairy colony at Ghogha in Narela where relocated dairy owners are being given plots. So far, 391 illegal dairy owners have deposited money with the civic body for plots," he informed. Mr. Mehta said those illegal dairy owners who have either not applied for dairy plots or made advance payment were being removed and the seized buffaloes and its progeny were being auctioned at the Baprola municipal cattle pond twice a week. So far, over Rs.12 lakhs has been realised through seized cattle, he added.
