BANGALORE, APRIL 9. Desha Kaala, a non-commercial Kannada literary quarterly, dedicated to encouraging intra-cultural dialogue, was released here today.

Speaking on the occasion, the Jnanpith award winner and Kannada writer U.R. Ananthamurthy said the success of cultural periodicals should not be measured by their longevity but by the influence they wield.

Referring to Kannada literature genres, short story in particular, he said a majority of good writers are contributing regularly to dailies and commercial periodicals and they have become adept at writing in such a way as to overcome the space constraints of these publications.

However, this hampers the creativity and growth of the writers, he felt.

Lack of good writers

Girish Karnad, Jnanpith award winner and playwright, said many problems are faced in publishing a periodical such as Desha Kaala. Finding good writers is one of them. He urged periodicals to revive the practice of allotting space to encourage cultural interaction.

Vivek Shanbhag, editor of Desha Kaala, and G.S. Amur, literary critic, spoke. S. Diwakar, writer, read out a short story. Abdul Rasheed, Kendriya Sahitya Academy award winner and Kannada poet, recited the Kannada translations of selected poems by P. Raman, a Malayalam poet. Mr. Rasheed's wife, Moly Varghese, recited Mr. Raman's poems in Malayalam. The Kannada writer Vaidehi recited a poem written by her recently.
