Settlement of farmers' dues demanded

By Our Staff Correspondent

GULBARGA, APRIL 9. The former Minister S.K. Kanta has threatened to lead a "jail bharo" agitation if the dues of farmers who supplied sugarcane to the Aland Sahakari Sakkare Karakhane are not settled within a week.

Mr. Kanta told presspersons here on Friday that the factory owes farmers Rs. 1.5 crores for sugarcane supplied in 1999-2000.

He held the Deputy Commissioner and the Special Officer of the factory, Anjum Pervez, responsible for the delay in settling dues.

The factory had the money to pay farmers, but it used the amount to pay back a portion of the loan taken from the Bidar District Central Cooperative Bank.

Letter

Mr. Kanta said that he has written a letter to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, asking him to withdraw Mr. Parvez's powers to overlook the administration of the factory.

The Deputy Commissioner had promised to settle the dues of farmers before paying back the bank loan, but had gone back on his word, Mr. Kanta said.

Mr. Kanta also alleged that Mr. Pervez had decided against taking up crushing at the factory in 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons though there was enough standing crop to start crushing. There is a conspiracy behind his decision, Mr. Kanta alleged.
