54,000 bogus family cards detected

By Our Special Correspondent

SALEM, APRIL 9. The licenses of LPG agencies found to be selling LPG cylinders meant for domestic use to commercial establishments such as hotels and cinema halls, will be immediately cancelled, the District Collector, A. Sukumaran, has said.

Kerosene for March and April had already been supplied to fair price shops. He said those selling kerosene in black market would be severely punished. The district administration had detected and cancelled 54,000 bogus family cards in the district.

Mr. Sukumaran said the revision of electoral rolls in the district was going on as scheduled. He expressed the hope that the work would be completed on time.

Village panchayat presidents would be held responsible for any malpractices while carrying out development works in their respective panchayats. "If the charges are proved during the investigation, they (panchayat presidents) will be stripped off their posts," the Collector warned.

Development of Yercaud

He said that Rs. 4.48 crores had been earmarked to give a face-lift and tone up infrastructure facilities at the Yeracud hill station. The Yercud Lake would be desilted at a cost of Rs. 1 crore. The ghat road, boat yard, the park of the Forest department and toilet facilities would be improved. Tourism-oriented works would be taken up.

The dates for the summer festival would also be announced shortly, he said and added that once these works were completed, Yercaud would become a sought-after resort for tourists from all over the country. The funds for the construction of new Collectorate for Salem would be earmarked under the 12th Finance Commission, he said.

Rainfall

The district received 503 mm of rain so far this year. The average annual rainfall is 1019 mm. The district had received 978 mm during last year. Tanks and ponds in the district were fast filling up because of the rain. The administration had taken necessary steps to strengthen the bunds of these tanks to prevent any breaching. Deep bore-wells were being sunk at various places in the district to meet the drinking water requirements, he said.
