TIRUNELVELI, APRIL 9. Preliminary works on setting up a titanium di oxide plant in Radhapuram taluk in the district will begin on an outlay of Rs.750 crores before the year-end, according to the Minister for Industries, Nainar Nagendran. Speaking at the Annual Day celebration of the St. John's College at Palayamkottai here today, Mr. Nagendran said the plant, to be established on an expenditure of over Rs.3,000 crores, would employ over 6,000 workers. He said, "The State Government is keen on establishing the hi-tech park at Nanguneri, though the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam claims responsibility for having taken steps for the multi-crore project." Mr. Nagendran said the National Thermal Power Corporation was about to set up a 1,000-MW thermal power plant at Tuticorin on an outlay of Rs.4,000 crores, in which over 5,000 persons would be employed. Later speaking at a function at Thatchanallur near here, the Minister said the Thatchanallur Drinking Water Scheme would be implemented at an expenditure of Rs.6.50 crores before the next Assembly elections. The `kumbabhishegam' of Sri Rajagopalasamy Swamy Temple at Palayamkottai would be conducted before this year-end, he added.
