HYDERABAD, APRIL 9. The State Government has decided to take over the Swarna Power Project under construction by a close relative of the Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, based on the Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme across the Tungabhadra. But this will be subject to approval by the Karnataka Government. This was the outcome of lengthy discussions on the issue at a high-level meeting chaired by the Chief Minister and attended by the Major Irrigation Minister, P. Lakshmaiah, among others.
Panel formed
The Minister later told reporters that a committee headed by the Chief Secretary, Mohan Kanda, and consisting of the Engineer-in-Chief, Major Irrigation, the Secretary, Finance (Projects) and the Managing Director of the Andhra Pradesh Generation Corporation had been constituted to suggest methods as to how the Government could go about the takeover. The decision was to execute it through Genco so that the project would be under Government control, ensure proper discharges to the RDS canal in Mahabubnagar district and avoid generation when the canal is in distress. A private individual, on the other hand, may not have such commitment, it was felt. It may be recalled that the Technical Committee which went into the issue, had submitted its report to the Government last week.
