Government seeks changes in MBBS curriculum

THANJAVUR, APRIL 9. The State Government and Dr. MGR Medical University have written to the Indian Medical Council seeking a change in the curriculum for MBBS courses from this academic year to improve the educational standard, said Health Minister Thalavai Sundaram.

He was speaking at the college day celebrations of the Thanjavur Medical College here today. The Minister said the 15 government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu were the maximum in any State.

Maharashtra stood second with 14 government medical colleges, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 13 and Kerala with 10.

Mr. Sundaram said the Government was committed to provide healthcare to rural areas and cited the upgrading of 105 primary health centres into 30-bed health centres.

Moreover all hospitals in the State would be be upgraded under the World Bank-aided project. Under the project every panchayat union will have an ambulance with cellphone facility and a medical officer to take care of medical requirements in the village. A Rs. 1.5-crore trauma care centre will also be established at the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital.

Earlier, the Minister inaugurated three Haemodialysis equipments, a water treatment plant, mammography machine, automatic analyser, a gym at women's hostel and a volley ball court. The Minister also launched the college website www.tmc.com.

He gave away prizes and certificates to rank holders at the function. R. Vaidyalingam, Minister for Environment and Forests; M. Veera Shanmugha Moni, Collector; K. Kalaiselvi, Dean of Thanjavur Medical College, spoke.
