ALAPPUZHA, APRIL. 9. A meeting of office-bearers of various Padasekhara Samithis (small groups of owners of paddy fields) in Kuttanad today formed an organisation named `Farmnet' to strive for farmers' causes. The meeting was held under the auspices of Kuttanad Vikasana Samithi at Mampuzhakkari A statement issued by the Kuttanad Vikasana Samithi executive director, Thomas Peelianikkal, here said Farmnet would hold its inaugural convention in May. Today's meeting extended all support to the initiative of the samithi to launch Karshaka brand rice, said Fr. Peelianikkal. The meeting decided to take over the rice mills in Kuttanad that are remaining closed. The meeting also decided to cooperate with NABARD, which plans to implement a comprehensive scheme for the development of paddy cultivation in Kuttanad. The project is estimated to cost Rs. 200 crores. The meeting asked office-bearers of all Padasekhara Samithis in Kuttanad to participate in the panchayat-level discussions being planned by the NABARD. Office-bearers of 150 Padasekhara Samithis participated in the meeting.
