Exhibition of Azhikode's collections

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR, APRIL 9. An exhibition focussing on the literal and social contributions of Sukumar Azhikode as well as his personal life was held at the Kerala Sahithya Akademi here today in connection with his 80th birthday celebrations. The awards and gifts received by Prof. Azhikode at different periods and books authored by him, and a few photographs both from his early days and later were featured in the exhibition.

One of the items on display is the Rajaji Literary Award given to the best work fostering moral and spiritual values in India, won by him in 1985 from the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. Prof. Azhikode is the only Keralite to win this award and it was presented to him in Bangalore when the late C. Subramaniam was the head of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan. The Ezhuthachan Award and the Central Sahithya Akademi Awards are also put on display.

The first book of Prof. Azhikode, `Asante Site Kavyam', the second one, `Ramananum Malayala Kavithayum' and the third `Mahatmavinte Margam' have been displayed in the book section. The book `G. Sankara Kurup Vimarsikkappedunnu ' and the much-debated `Thatwamasi' as well as its Tamil translation are also on display. A curious item in the book section is `Azhikodinte Phalithangal', which is a collection of jokes narrated by him. Jawaharlal Nehru's `A bunch of old letters,' which has been translated by Prof. Azhikode and the late Thayat Sankaran, as `Orukoottam Pazhaya Kathukal' is another interesting work on display. Jawaharlal Nehru had autographed the book with his signature in 1963.

The exhibition also features some rare photographs of Prof. Azhikode from his early days as well as from his later life after he became a powerful orator. The exhibition was inaugurated by the educationist P. Chithran Namboodirippad.
