NEW DELHI, APRIL 9. Seen as Jawaharlal Nehru University's (JNU) hub of political debate and discussions, this Saturday saw the Ganga Dhaba double up as a history `classroom', with a special exhibition on "Press: Gandhi and Dandi'' providing a trip back in time. Organised by the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), the travelling exhibition delves into the role played by the Fourth Estate in building the national mood through their writings and reports on the freedom movement. The exhibition showcases 40 posters consisting of 100 articles that were written in the national and international press in the year 1930 about the Dandi March. "We went through over 1,300 articles before finally settling for the final 100. Our research showed that the media played a very important role in building the mood and in getting the message across. At a time when people were wondering how a simple issue of salt would help evoke a sense of nationalism, the press did the much important job,'' said NSUI's Kuntal Krishna. After its inauguration in JNU, the one-day exhibition will now travel to the Aligarh Muslim University and later to other colleges and universities across the country, with colleges in Jammu and Kashmir being one of the States where the NSUI is eager to take the exhibition.
