DMK seeks CRPF cover for Corporation by-elections

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, APRIL 9. The DMK representatives in the Parliament, Assembly and local bodies today approached the Governor, Surjit Singh Barnala, seeking his help to get security cover by the Central Reserve Police Force during the polling and the counting of votes for the coming Corporation ward by-elections.

Led by the North Chennai M.P, C. Kuppuswamy, the DMK leaders in a memorandum presented to Mr. Barnala, also wanted him to direct the State Election Commission to permit videography of the polling and the counting of votes. They presented the memorandum at the Raj Bhavan today.

It alleged that during the Corporation/Mayoral elections in October 2001, the ruling party resorted to violence and many bogus votes were cast. But the police did not take action. This also happened during the counting of votes and during the by-elections to two wards in April 2002.

In September 2004, the party approached the Madras High Court for a direction to officials to provide sufficient protection on the day of polling of a ward by-election. It also wrote to the Corporation Commissioner seeking permission for videography in the polling booths, but it was rejected. During the polling, DMK men were attacked, but the police remained spectators, the memorandum said.

By-elections to Ward No. 110 and 131 are to be held on April 19. The DMK said they feared that there would be violence "with the help of the police," to help the ruling party win the elections.

The DMK candidates had submitted a memorandum to the State Election Commissioner seeking protection by the CRPF instead of the State police and permission to videograph the polling and counting.
