Vaigai riverbed being readied for Lord Kallazhagar's entry

By S. Sundar

MADURAI, APRIL 9. The Corporation is making elaborate arrangements to make the place where Lord Kallazhagar will enter to the Vaigai more devotee-friendly.

Apart from putting up a huge ramp on the northern side of the river near A.V. Bridge, the Corporation officials are partially closing the mouth of the Pandalgudi channel, which carries sewage into the river.

The sewage, which mixes with the river exactly at the place where Lord Kallazahgar enters the river, makes the area stink. The Corporation Commissioner, D.J. Dinakaran, who inspected the venue recently, asked the engineers to keep the venue clean for the benefit of the devotees attending the festival.

Now, the 15-feet-wide drainage channel is open for a length of 40 feet from Azhawarpuram. One of the two spans would be closed and the sewage would be diverted through a closed conduit, comprising two huge concrete pipes.

The drainage would be let through the pipes for nearly 200 metres, so that the bad odour is minimised and the place looks less dirty.

However, the other span would be left open to act as a storm water drainage pipe in case it rains during the festival.

Another important step is the provision of fresh water pipelines with numerous taps near both banks at the venue.

The officials are planning to lay temporary pipelines from several mini-power pump projects provided for the residents on both the banks.

The pipelines with multiple taps would take care of the bathing needs of the devotees, who offer their hair to the deity on the day.

Work on the laying of the closed conduit and ramp began today.
