COIMBATORE, APRIL 9. In separate raids , the revenue officials unearthed a huge haul of kerosene and rice meant for distribution under the Public Distribution System (PDS). Following specific information, the District Revenue Officer, M. Karunakaran, ordered surprise checks.In one such check conducted at Balamurugan Nagar in Narashimanaickenpalayam in Coimbatore North Taluk, the officials found 38 bags of boiled rice and ten bags of raw rice each of them containing 50 kg. The entire consignment of 2,275 kg worth over Rs. 27,000 concealed in a roadside bush was seized. Following information that kerosene meant for distribution under PDS was concealed in a house at Selvapuram Muthusamy Colony, the DRO ordered for surprise checks. The officials found that two licencees of kerosene handcart had concealed their stock with a view to sell it at a premium rate in open market.
Similarly, the Flying squad staff conducted discreet enquiries in Selvapuram, Indira Nagar and Alamu Nagar areas and found that a grocery shop had unauthorised stock of 110 litres of kerosene and 30 litres of white kerosene.The entire quantity of 445 litres of kerosene worth over Rs. 14,000 was seized and criminal action had been initiated against the black marketers, the DRO said. In another operation, teams raided a grocery shop belonging to Varadarajan of Lawley Road and seized 1,502 litres of PDS kerosene stocked in 33 cans. In the same area, the teams unearthed 495 litres of white kerosene, which was stocked in the house of Kumar.
Vigil stepped up
Following information that ration rice was being smuggled to Kerala through passenger trains, vigil had been stepped up at Podanur railway station and all passing trains were being subjected to check. In the last few weeks, the officials seized a number of rice bags, which were concealed in the toilets of trains.
