Arvind Bhat in Polish Open final

NEW DELHI, APRIL 10. India's Arvind Bhat defeated Jens-Kristian Leth of Denmark in straight games to storm into the final of the Polish Open badminton championship at Spala, Poland.

The 93-ranked Indian needed just 39 minutes to down the Dane 15-11, 15-7 to stay on course for his second international title, according to information received here on Sunday. Bhat had won the Scottish Open last year.

Bhat showed tremendous stamina to beat Jan Vondra of Czech Republic 15-12, 15-1 in the pre-quarterfinals. He defeated second-seeded Joachim Persson of Denmark 15-8, 0-15, 15-9 in the quarterfinals.

Bhat will now take on top seed and local favourite Prezemyslaw Wacha, who had earlier accounted for the other two Indians in the fray.

In the semifinal, Wacha defeated Thomas Kurien 15-4, 15-7 in just 27 minutes. Wacha got the better of national champion Anup Sridhar 15-9, 12-15, 15-12 in the pre-quarterfinals.

Kurien defeated third seed Jan Frohlich of Czech Republic 15-3, 15-3 to move into the semifinals. Kurien beat Lewis Martyn of Wales 15-5, 15-4 in the round of 16. — PTI
