VISAKHAPATNAM, APRIL 10. The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has proposed to set up a unit near Visakhapatnam to expand its research and development (R&D) activity. The Associate Professor, Physics Group, BARC, S. Kailas, and the Head, Public Awareness Division, Atomic Energy Department, Swapnesh Kumar Malhotra, said on Sunday that the State Government is considering allotment of 1,500 acres on the city outskirts for setting up the unit. The district Collector, Praveen Prakash, had confirmed identification of a few sites for the proposed unit, sometime ago. The BARC was set up at Trombay on an area of 10 square kilometres in 1967 as a tribute to H.J. Bhabha, the great visionary, who had initiated Indian nuclear programme. The core mandate of BARC is to provide R&D support required to sustain one of the major applications of nuclear energy viz. power generation.
Focus on R&D
BARC objectives include conceptualisation of the programme, finalisation of the design of the reactor and the peripheral components, preparation of computer generated working models and their evaluation studies under simulated reactor running conditions. Dr. Kailas said the new unit would focus on basic research for future. For instance, he narrated how they could develop 24 varieties of seeds in coordination with the Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR). He said they had reached saturation stage at Trombay, where they had undertaken various projects.
