KOLLAM, APRIL 10. The Superintendent of Police, S. Sreejith, today suspended two constables of the Kollam East Police Station in connection with the custodial death of Rajendran, 36, on April 6. The suspended constables are Jayakumar and Venugopal of the crime squad of the station. On Saturday, the additional sub-inspector, S. Babu, was suspended. A police inquiry as well as a magisterial investigation is going on into the incident. The State Human Rights Commission has registered a case and will launch another inquiry. The National Human Rights Commission has also been informed about the death. The autopsy report states that the "death had occurred due to injury to the head and the trunk.'' Off-the-record police version is that Rajendran's health condition was bad while being taken to a private hospital on April 6. The police suspect that he was assaulted by people before being handed over to them. However, the police had recorded neither his health condition nor his statement. Rajendran was also not subjected to any medical examination. The general diary record at the station states that he was taken out of the police station by two constables of the squad.
