By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, APRIL 10. The Pondicherry-based Bharata Ratna MGR Podhunala Samooga Peravai, a non-governmental organisation, has called upon Lt Governor M.M. Lakhera to take steps to protect the decades-old banyan trees on the Pondicherry-Gorimedu route near the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education Research (JIPMER) hospital and at Sultanpet on the Pondicherry-Villianoor Highway. An NGO delegation led by secretary D. Siva presented a memorandum to Mr. Lakhera here on Saturday. It said erection of iron fences on the road had obstructed the growth of a row of banyan trees near the JIPMER hospital.
