PONDICHERRY, APRIL 10. The pulse polio immunisation drive, targeting children below five, was launched in the Union Territory today with the administering of polio drops to children by Lt Governor M.M. Lakhera and Chief Minister N. Rangasamy, at a function in the Rajnivas. Health Minister E. Valsaraj, Director of Health and Family Welfare Services G.S. Reddy and officials of the department were present at the launch. The department hopes to cover 93,371 children in Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. In addition to health department officials, the staff of the Department of Women and Child Development, volunteers of the National Service Scheme and a number of voluntary organisations also extended their service in administering the vaccine. Mobile teams also operated at various points and health personnel administered drops at border points.
Nomadic tribes covered
In Cuddalore, Collector Gagandeep Singh Bedi inaugurated the drive at the main bus stand here by administering the vaccine to children of Nari Koravas. When a group of gypsies came to the bus stand with infants, the officials brought them to the pulse polio camp at the bus stand. As many as 2.80 lakhs children up to five years had been identified for administering the drops in the district. Seven thousand employees and volunteers from social service organisations were involved in the task. The vaccine was administered at 1,512 camps. In Villupuram, Education Minister C.Ve Shanmugham inaugurated the polio camp at Saram. Over 9,000 employees and volunteers worked to cover 3.20 lakhs children in the district.
