NEW DELHI, APRIL 10. A day after the Janata Dal (United) leader, Nitish Kumar, said he would give up efforts for formation of a government in Bihar, the party's National Executive at its meeting here today decided that it would continue with the efforts. The National Executive also decided to launch a nationwide campaign against the Congress to highlight the ``conspiracy hatched by the party'' to malign the JD (U) president, George Fernandes, and boycott him in Parliament for over three years. ``We will hold a rally in Delhi to expose the role of the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, in the conspiracy,'' said the JD (U) spokesman, Shiv Kumar.
Concern over attack on Fernandes
According to him delegates including State presidents, expressed serious concern over the ``continuous attack'' on Mr. Fernandes and decided to launch a campaign. He said most of the delegates wanted the agenda against the Congress to be more focussed and the protests should be sharp and nationwide. A major part of the draft resolution is on the latest developments with regard to the ``witch-hunting'' by the Congress and demands that the Central Vigilance Commission Report on defence deals and the Phukan Commission Report on the Tehelka sting operation be made public. The executive deliberated upon the draft resolution, which attacked the United Progressive Alliance Government for its ``unfilled promises'' and the ``brazen manner'' in which it went ahead to undermine democracy in Goa and Jharkhand recently. It also attacked the Left parties for compromises on the implementation of the Common Minimum Programme and said the ``highly advertised'' CMP seems to have been discarded with the CPI and CPI (M) getting ready to form a third-front. Responding to the Lok Jan Shakti party leader, Ram Vilas Paswan, raising the issue of Mr. Nitish's locus standi in taking the initiative on government formation in Bihar, Mr. Shiv Kumar said he had been authorised by the party in its three-day review meeting in Ranchi held recently. The two-day National Executive was presided over by Mr. Fernandes and attended among others by Sharad Yadav, Mr. Nitish, Digvijay Singh, K.C. Tyagi, all general secretaries, all 10 MPs, state presidents and others. Tomorrow the meeting will adopt a resolution and set a calendar for organisational elections. The party will also launch a membership drive.
