MADIKERI, APRIL 10. The Nagarika Samiti has urged the Virajpet Town Panchayat to take steps to collect property tax at the rate levied in 2001-02 for the following years, in line with opinions expressed by a few Congress members of the panchayat at a meeting held recently. In a statement here on Sunday, the president of the samiti, Nayada Vasu Nanjappa, said that the samiti will welcome the decision of the panchayat member and president of the Virajpet town unit of the Congress, Prithivinath, who had said that the panchayat should wait till the Government issued a fresh order in this regard. Mr. Prithivinath had also said that property tax should not be paid until then in Virajpet.
Land value
Another Congress member, Asghar Hussain, said that payment of property tax should be considered only after land value is decreased. The samiti urged the panchayat to pass a resolution to make citizens pay property tax at the rate levied in 2001-02 for 2002-03, 2003-04, and 2004-05. The land value given by the sub-registrar's office was erroneous. The land value announced by the sub-registrar's office in 1999 was consistent with the economic situation of the year. Land value needs to be reviewed in accordance with the present situation, Mr. Nanjappa said. The assessment of the value of the buildings to determine tax was unscientific, he said. The samitinot hesitate to launch a State-level protest, he warned. The panchayat should also look into the irrational hike in water tariff, he added.
