Padayatra for

Musi cleansing

NALGONDA: Activists of the Musi Parirakshana & Jala Sadhana Samiti and the Rastra Yuvajana Samghala Samithi on Sunday launched a padayatra from Valigonda to Hyderabad demanding that the Government install a chemical treatment plant to clean the Musi waters. J.Balakrishna Reddy, the State president of the Yuvajana Samghala Samithi, said Musi was being contaminated by industrial effluents, which in turn was spoiling the ground water.

The padayatra would culminate at a public meeting in Hyderabad on April 17.

Teachers' picket

ADILABAD: Teachers working under the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA), Utnoor, picketed the SSC spot valuation centre at the St Joseph's Convent High School on Sunday morning demanding common service rules for tribal teachers.

The agitating teachers under the banner of Government Tribal Welfare Teachers Ikya Porata Samiti closed the gates of the centre for about half an hour at 9 am thereby stopping teachers on duty from entering the school.

Free yoga camp

KARIMNAGAR: The Vivekananda yoga centre, Karimnagar will organise a free yoga and personality development camp for schoolchildren from April 21 to May 5 at its centre in Prasanthnagar in the town. Statue to be

unveiled

KARIMNAGAR: The former Assembly speaker, D Sripada Rao's bronze statue would be unveiled in Mahadevpur mandal headquarters of Manthani Assembly segment on April 13, according to the Government Whip and Manthani legislator, D Sridhar here today.

The APCC president, K Kesava Rao, Ministers, Md Fariduddin, M Satyanarayana Rao, and the Peddapalli MP, G Venkat Swamy will participate.

`Bike No.1

Sambaralu'

TIRUPATI: Bajaj Auto organised a musical nite at Nehru Lalithakala Pranganam here on Sunday evening to celebrate the success of its sales figures in all its three motorcycle segments. Titled `Bike No.1 Sambaralu', the event had a motorcycle rally in the town, which was flagged off by the traffic inspector, A. Shankar.

The TUDA Chairman, B. Karunakar Reddy, was the chief guest at the musical nite. G. M. Sivakumar, officer, Bajaj Auto and Srinivasa Rao, proprietor of its authorised dealer, Sriram Bajaj, took part.

MP's plea to Government

HYDERABAD: Asaduddin Owaisi, MP, has urged the State Government to initiate action against the firms which are allegedly slaughtering small cattle (calf) and exporting the same.

In a letter to the Government, the copy of which has been released to the Press, Mr. Owaisi has stated that slaughter houses like Al-Kabir and Alana, who deal with export of beef, have the permission for slaughtering cattle, but are allegedly involved in slaughtering of small cattle.

"The Government must take action against such firms immediately and the process of modernisation of slaughter houses should be quicker."

Special train for Mysore

HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway is running a weekly summer special from Secunderabad to Mysore from April 16 to June 12 to ease the heavy passenger traffic. Train no. 789 will leave Secunderabad on April 16, 23, 30, May 7, 14, 21, 28 and June 4 and 11 at 9.20 p.m. and reach Mysore via Bangalore (10.20 a.m.) at 1.20 p.m. next day. In return direction train no. 790 will leave Mysore on April 17, 24, May 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 and June 5 and 12 at 2.30 p.m. and reach Secunderabad at 7.25 a.m. next day. The weekly summer special will have an AC first class-cum-AC two-tier coach, an AC two-tier coach, one AC three-tier coach, eight sleeper coaches, two general second class coaches and an equal number of second class luggage-cum-brake van coaches.

Student organisations' demand

HYDERABAD: The Joint Action Committee of students' organisations has demanded action against bogus minority B.Ed colleges and those violating norms of admission. In a statement here on Sunday, the JAC said the Convenor of Admissions be given powers to admit students in Christian minority colleges as only 3,000 Christian candidates cleared the examination for 8,000 seats. As all of them would be accommodated, the Convenor himself should fill seats to ensure that they were not misused, it said.

Naxalite surrenders

HYDERABAD: A teenager, Ch. Ramesh of Thippayaguda in Manchal mandal in Ranga Reddy district, who was allegedly lured into revolutionary movement by Maoists, surrendered before the Cyberabad police on Sunday.

Presenting him at a press conference here, the Cyberabad DCP, Mrugesh Kumar Singh, charged that the boy was used as a slave by the Rachakonda and Krishnapatti dalams of Maoists. His parents -Yadaiah and Veeramma- were labourers.

"I realised that the promises of better living made by naxalite leaders were false after joining the dalam and returned home while I was on sentry duty," Ramesh said.

Ganja seized from women

NELLORE: The excise authorities took into custody two women at RTC bus stand, here, on Friday for allegedly carrying 32 kg of ganja in a bag. The women, who belonged to Visakhapatnam, were travelling in a bus. On specific information, the officials checked the bus and took the two women into custody.

SCR freight earnings up

HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway has rounded off the financial year 2004-05 having loaded 51 million tonnes. This marks an increase of 6.22 million tonnes over 2003-04 and it is three million tonnes more than the target fixed.

In a press release, the SCR General Manager, D.N. Mathur, said that coal, which constitutes 43 per cent of the originating freight loading in the zone had seen a growth of 5.4 per cent over the last year. Cement and clinker loading saw an increase of 13.7 per cent. Interestingly, the highest-ever loading of iron ore after the bifurcation of the SCR was in 2004-05 at 2.46 million tonnes.

Mr. Mathur said the overall performance improvement had its impact on the zone's earnings which had touched Rs. 4,149 crores as against Rs. 3,702.47 crores last year.

Girl's death triggers protest

ELURU: The death of a class VII girl student in a social welfare hostel at Pedapadu in West Godavari district triggered protest here on Sunday.

The Congress SC cell, which staged a demonstration at Eluru Government Hospital where the girl -- Katru Vani (13) -- was `brought dead' from Pedapadu, accused the hostel authorities of inaction. According to information,Vani, a resident of Kondalaraopalem in Pedavegi mandal, complained nausea on Friday night. A worker gave her a tablet. But she reportedly developed fits next day. She was taken to the local Primary Health Centre but the personnel there wanted her shifted to Eluru Government Hospital since her condition was `serious.'

Cases against Dalit leaders

CUDDAPAH: Cases were booked against the SC United Front general secretary, A. Baladasu, and some Dalit leaders on the charge of encroaching reserve forest land, the Cuddapah Divisional Forest Officer, M. Revathi, said on Sunday.

The cases were booked as they allegedly dug up a pit wherein the holy Cross was installed in the Kanumulopalle reserve forest. Ms. Revathi, who inspected the site, said the accused violated provisions of Section 20 of the Andhra Pradesh Forest Act and the Forest Conservation Act, 1980. Complaints were lodged with the police against the leaders, she said.

Meanwhile, the Dalit leaders accused the forest officials of removing the Cross from a hillock near the JMJ College on the Cuddapah-Chennai National Highway.

Farm worker ends life

Kakinada: A farm worker, Kotipalli Venkateswarlu (35), allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at Vontithadi village of Kajuluru mandal on Sunday. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition. He died later.

60 taken ill

NALGONDA: Sixty persons fell ill after eating `prasadam' at the Venkateswara temple in Parvedula of Peddavura mandal on Sunday.

According to information, the devotees developed nausea after taking `pulihora' and `daddojanam.' Some of them were taken to Kamala Nehru Hospital at Nagarjunasgar.

YSR for Kurnool today

KURNOOL: The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will visit Pandurangapuram near Nandyal on Monday as part of the Praja Pratham programme.

Dr. Reddy will land at 2.30 p.m. and take part in a gram sabha and address a public meeting before returning to Hyderabad. The police made elaborate security arrangements in connection with his visit.

TIRUPATI: B. Padmanabha Reddy has been elected general secretary of the Chittoor District Coaching Centres Association at a meeting of the association held recently.

Tractors seized

CUDDAPAH: The Penagalur police seized eight tractors carrying sand unauthorisedly near N.R. Puram in Penagalur mandal on Sunday.

The tractors were kept in Penagalur police station. A case was registered, according to the Penagalur SI, Obaiah.

AIR phone-in programme

CUDDAPAH: The Collector, Jayesh Ranjan, and the SP, V.C. Sajjanar, will participate in Akashvani's live phone-in programme on Monday.

Mr. Ranjan would interact with listeners and elicit their suggestions on `accountability of Government officials towards people and their problems' at 8.35 a.m., according to the in-charge AIR Cuddapah Station Director, N. Vijayasarathi. The SP would interact with listeners on `easing traffic in Cuddapah, Proddatur, Jammalamadugu and Rajampet' at 9.15 a.m. Interested persons could contact the officials on 244197.

Lok Adalat

MADANAPALLE: The Transco office in Thamballapalle will conduct a Lok Adalat at its office on April 11. On April 23, another Lok Adalat will be held at the Thamballapalle court, the Magistrate, Pattabhirama Rao, said.

MADANAPALLE: Ugadi was celebrated here yesterday under the auspices of Madanapalle Writers Association, in which 18 poets participated. The MLA, D. Ramesh, was the chief guest. The association president, M. Guraviah, presided while the secretary, Balasubramanyam Pillai, read out the annual report. Prominent persons were felicitated on the occasion. The joint secretary, P.T. Sarma, proposed vote of thanks.
