HYDERABAD, APRIL 10. The Telugu Desam today objected to the Government's decision to take over the Swarna Power Project being built by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's close relative and demanded that the Government halt work. Addressing a press conference, the TDP leaders -- N. Janardhan Reddy and R.Chandrasekhara Reddy -- charged the Government with resorting to "nepotism" and trying to "legalise corruption" in the name of taking over of the project. Terming the decision as "strange," they said the TDP would oppose the project if the interests of the farmers were harmed. Condemning the Government stand, they wondered if it had asked the technical committee to come out with an alternative proposal. The committee's task ought to have been to identify the benefits or harm that might be caused to the State by the project which was permitted "illegally and unilaterally" by the Karnataka Government. They claimed that all parties wanted the project stopped as it would harm the interests of farmers of Mahabubnagar district. The TDP leaders criticised the Chief Minister for failing to come to the rescue of chilli farmers but showing interest in taking over a private power project.
All-party meet
Our Kurnool Staff Reporter adds: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi is likely to join hands with the TDP along with other parties on the power project issue. An all-party meeting on the issue has been convened at Santhinagar in the Alampur constituency on April 15. The TRS took the lead role to organise the meeting under the banner of RDS Parirakshana Ikya Vedika. The TRS State secretary, Nagaradoddi Venkatramudu, told The Hindu at Gadwal in Mahbubnagar district that besides the TDP, all major parties -- the BJP, Congress, Telangana Jana Sabha -- and farmers associations had been invited to the meeting.
