RTC to plump for CNG

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, APRIL 10. The APSRTC is going the CNG way soon. The first ever RTC depot running CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) buses will be coming up in Vijayawada by May.

According to sources, a tie-up with Reliance and ONGC will enable the RTC to run noiseless and pollution free CNG buses in the State.

The RTC authorities have been asked to identify the bus depot and also tie-up with private bus operators who have hired their vehicles to the APSRTC to go in for the change.

The switch-over to CNG services will be undertaken in a phased manner. However, within a year, it may be introduced in all major cities across the State. RTC officials are also studying the New Delhi experience in this regard.

Several advantages are in store for the RTC facing tough times due to falling revenue and increased expenditure.

The fuel cost will come down by nearly 50 per cent compared to diesel operations. Theft of CNG, like other fuels, is also ruled out in the new system.
