Bribery case complainant held for Malta boat tragedy

JALANDHAR, APRIL 10 . The Non-Resident Indian, Joga Singh, a complainant against the police alleging illegal confinement and graft, was today arrested in connection with the Malta boat tragedy of 1996.

The district police, through a press statement, said that Joga Singh was arrested for his alleged involvement in the Malta boat tragedy.

He has been booked under Sections 420, 467, 471, 120 (B) of Indian Penal Code and the Passport Act and Immigration Act.

However, Singh's family alleged that the police acted out of vindictiveness after the NRI refused to strike a compromise with them in the Noormahal bribery case.

``We have received a call in the morning from Manjit Singh, the former Noormahal SHO indicted in the bribery case and was still absconding, who threatened us with dire consequences if we don't take back the case'', Amarjit Singh, a close relative of Joga Singh, told reporters today.

``The Malta boat tragedy had occurred in 1996, and Joga Singh's name appears nowhere in the FIR pertaining to the tragedy,'' he said quipping how come police suddenly found some vital clues to book Joga.

``We know that Joga has been framed falsely just because he complained against the SHO and two other cops for taking Rs five lakh as bribe'', Amarjit alleged.- PTI
