ALAPPUZHA, APRIL 10. The Department of Tourism will provide training to hotel workers on the etiquette to be followed while receiving foreign tourists, the Tourism Minister, K.C. Venugopal, has said. Inaugurating a seminar on eco-tourism organised by the Alappuzha District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) at Thanneermukkom, Mr. Venugopal said it was important that foreign tourists were received cordially.
Waste disposal
Mr. Venugopal said the department would give certificates to those hotels that gave importance to waste disposal. It was important that the forests and backwaters were preserved. The rich cultural heritage of the State also should be preserved, the Minister said. Mr. Venugopal said that the Tourism Ministry would not implement any programme that would adversely affect the ecology and culture of the State. Houseboats that did not have waste treatment system would not be allowed to operate, he said. Some people in the tourism sector who had no expertise in ayurveda were using it to exploit tourists. The Government would enact a law to prevent this, he said. Mr. Venugopal said the Government would take swift action against those who misused ayurveda once the law came into force. The Alappuzha District Collector, K.R. Muraleedharan, presided over the inaugural function. The Alappuzha DTPC secretary, K.M. Muhammed Bashir, spoke. The Eco-tourism director, K.G. Mohanlal, the scientist K. Madhusoodanan and the Nirmithi Kendram Alappuzha project engineer, B. Ajayakumar, presented papers.
