Polio vaccine administered

The oral polio vaccine was administered to 2,90,330 children below five years in the district on Sunday, as part of the Pulse Polio immunisation drive.

The district health administration officials said that 93.9 per cent of the target population had been covered today. Mop-up rounds will be held on April 11 and 12 by health workers to cover those children who were missed out.

A press release issued by the Directorate of Health Services added that the State had achieved a pulse polio coverage of 97.8 per cent by administering the vaccine to 28,81,188 children below five years.

Award given

The State Commissioner of the Kerala State Bharat Scouts and Guides, P.V. Kurien, has been given the `Silver Elephant' award-the highest national award of the organisation.

A press note issued here today said Mr. Kurien began his service as a teacher at the age of 19 and went on to hold the posts of school headmaster, deputy director of education and State Adult Education Officer. He was one among the 12 persons deputed to handle educational matters when African nations attained independence.

It was mainly due to the efforts of Mr. Kurien that scouts and guides in the State who won the `rastrapathi' and `rajyapuraskar' awards started getting grace marks for the SSLC examinations. He was also instrumental in persuading the government to hike its grant for the scouts and guides from Rs.5 lakhs a year to Rs.30 lakhs, the press note added.

`Resurface roads'

The CPI Peroorkada local committee has urged the Government to take immediate steps to resurface the Mannanthala-Peroorkada road, which was dug up for laying pipelines by the Kerala Water Authority. In a statement here today, the local committee secretary, P.S. Naidu, has said the authorities had not initiated any steps to resurface the stretch. Memorandums have been given several times during the last six months. The CPI has said it would launch an agitation if the authorities failed to initiate the necessary steps.
